Making the Snow Statues in Sapporo

How do they actually go about making these statues out of snow?

Firstly, an accurate blueprint is required and based on this plan, a wooden frame is constructed and filled with tightly packed snow. This frame serves as scaffolding for the snow building.

Once the packed snow becomes hard, the frame panels are removed and then the carving is begins.

Hatchets and shovels are used to outline the sculpture, then the details are added. A small model of the sculpture is used as a blueprint. Interestingly, the sculptors often work at night because it is colder and easier for the scultping process.

When the sculpture is completed, the scaffoldings are removed. Accumulated snowfall, and icicles that have formed on the sculpture must be taken away as they cant harden and ruin the shape.
